"O connoisseurs of thirst, Beasts of my soul who long to learn to drink Of pure mirage, those prosperous islands are accurst That shimmer on the brink of absence" from “A World without Objects Is a Sensible Emptiness” by Richard Wilbur If "& The Sparrows" shows us the naive and inspired youth of an artist, "Islands" speaks to the great turmoil and ultimate deliverance of maturity. Filled with lush strings and late night civil war horns, this record truly represents the diversity of a new american composer. After the improvisational creation of "& The Sparrows", Keegan set out to create a recording that most accurately sounded like the swells and tones of his own heart. Whether it's in the baroque arrangement of "Telephone", the jubilation of "Come Celia" or the sad longing of "Speak Your Love For Me Low"... all shades of the human experience are represented in sound. Again recorded by the amazing Roman Candle and mixed by the perfectionist ears of Chris Stamey, "Islands" shows the cheeky and talented kid of "& The Sparrows" all grown up and delivering on that wisdom you knew was there.
